This was an identity design project where we were assigned to research a large company that needed a new identity. The company that I chose was a grocery store called Food Lion. Food Lion originally known as the large company, Food Town, is a grocery store company that was founded in December 11, 1957 in Salisbury North Carolina. Food Lion is the seventh-largest Supermarket chain in the United States. The company has well over 1,100 stores in 14 states and is still growing at a rapid pace.
Food Lion proudly employs 63,000 associates and serves more than 10 million customers a week. Their products are rarely out of stock, and sold at a very low price. Food Lion has had the same Identity for over 60 years and is due for a much needed upgrade in its visual identity. The symbol was designed to be simple and give it a new clean/modern feel. It can be used in several different formats. The font that was used with the new symbol is Trade gothic.
This was another branding project. We were assigned to completely rebrand a smaller company. I chose a Chinese restaurant named Nanjing Dreaming. In the rebranding my goal was to give the restaurant brand a unique look that fit it’s name and would allow it to stick out. The symbol was designed to be a simple and mellow as possible. I really wanted to play off of the name, so I decided to use a very simple rice bowl with chop sticks and added a simple cloud to it. The reason I added a cloud was that clouds are associated with dreams, and a bowl with chop sticks alone would not stick out. The colors that the brand uses are blue, white and black which help in providing a mellow and modern feel.
In one of my classes we were assigned to chose an art movement and promote it. In this project we needed to create three different envelopes along with stamps, seals, information cards, and brochures. Each one would highlight a crucial artist and his work in that particular movement.
In this project the assignment was to research a unique topic and design a book that promoted a paper company by using their paper. The topic I chose for my book was slasher films. The reason for choosing this topic was my belief that this would truly stand out and would be a lot of fun to design. The book was a hard cover and included another book that offered rules and tools how to survive a slasher movie. The second book also included a bookmark which provided another avenue to promote the paper company.
We were assigned to find a famous screen play and recapitulate the story with our own interpretation strictly using typography with minimal image usage. This book involved several different fonts. The book was printed as a soft cover and perfect bound book.
This is an expressive type specimen book that I made on Franklin Gothic and an example of a saddle stitch usage. The main purpose of this book was to provide important information specific to the font. One of the main goals was to make the font design interesting while also highlighting its unique and special traits. I also added a poster with this project keeping the same color format as the book with the design highlighting the major traits of the Franklin Gothic font.
The mission for this project was to conceptualize and develop an event invitation for the premiere U.S. solo museum exhibition of the acclaimed fashion designer Guo Pei. The invitation should utilize interesting papers, have unique and complex die, matching envelope, and must meet the specified technical requirements. SCAD presents Guo Pei: Couture Beyond, was an exhibition of more than 40 of her grandest, most dramatic couture designs from the past decade, alongside a selection of custom dresses and jackets, accordant footwear and accessories. Guo Pei was the first Chinese national designer invited to join the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. In her fantastical, unrestrained creations, Guo Pei imbues contemporary high fashion with ancient tradition, invoking history and mythology troughintricate craftsmanship, opulent embroidery and sumptuous detail. Featured prominently in the exhibition was the now-iconic imperial yellow cape worn by Rihanna to The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala of 2015 – a seminal moment that introduced Guo Pei to America’s fashion cognoscenti.
In this project we were assigned to pick a specific author and three of their books to design a dust cover for each book making each one unique yet similar. The author I chose was Hunter S. Thompson. There are several reasons I chose Thompson one of them being he was an amazing writer and it would be great fun to design a cover for his books. My goal was to make sure that my design matched the personality of the author and the tone of the book.
In this project the assignment was to research and pick a social issue then create a poster that would grab the viewers attention and inform people of the issue. The topic I chose was domestic violence. In this poster project I highly relied on the use of photography coupled with the strategic use of Typography. In this design I merged several symbols to illustrate my point and get the viewers attention. I used a clinched fist with brass knuckles which is always associated violence. I then merged the brass knuckles with a wedding ring which is a symbol love between two people. This image is meant to highlight how some people take something wonderful and turn it into a way to take advantage of others and hurting those involved.
